Why Choose a Dome Shelter for Your Heavy Vehicle Workshop

If you’re running a heavy vehicle workshop, you need a truck maintenance shelter that actually works for large vehicles like yours. A dome shelter gives you clearspan coverage, genuine weather protection, fast setup, and the flexibility to relocate if your operation moves – all without the cost or wait of a traditional shed.

Here’s what makes them such a good fit.

What heavy vehicle workshops actually need

Trucks, prime movers, buses, and heavy machinery aren’t like ordinary passenger vehicles. They’re tall, wide, and take up serious ground space. This means that your workshop will need clearspan coverage with no internal posts in the way, enough height for cab-over trucks and raised equipment, protection from dust, UV, and rain, and a dry working surface year-round. Traditional structures often fall short on one or more of these fronts – or come with a price tag and a build timeline that rules them out for smaller operations or remote sites.

One customer recently purchased a shelter measuring 12m wide x 12m long with a 3.6m apex (above shipping containers for additional storage), advising, “It is a cost effective way to provide a large shelter with no posts for the workforce.” And we couldn’t agree more.

Why dome shelters work so well

The arch design of our container dome shelters solves real problems.

There are no internal columns or posts, so the entire floor area is usable – and this is absolutely critical when you’re manoeuvring something the size of a road train. The opaque Canvacon® PE fabric has slight light transmission, diffusing natural light evenly across the space, which reduces shadows and makes detailed mechanical work easier during the day. And, because the fabric reflects heat rather than absorbing it, your interior will stay noticeably cooler than a steel-clad shed would in summer.

When it comes to weather protection, Ezy Igloo shelters are engineer-certified for Wind Regions A, B or C (including cyclone-rated options) and built to AS/NZS 1170.2:2021. Our base rail system seals the cover without penetrating the container roof, giving you maximum waterproofing without tek screws – and without the water ingress issues that cheaper shelters are prone to.

You can read more about how we engineer for Australian conditions in our Australia wind ratings guide.

Automotive workshop storage with your container base

One of the practical advantages of a container-mounted dome is that the shipping containers themselves become part of your operation. They provide secure, lockable storage for tools, parts, fluids, and workshop supplies – right there beneath the shelter where you need them. Pairing shelters with shipping containers will turn your covered workspace into a self-contained setup without needing a separate storage solution, which means that you and your crew will have everything close by and protected, right when you need it.

Relocatable when your operation moves

For transport companies, civil contractors, and mining operations, a fixed building can become a liability when the work moves on. Container domes are designed to be dismantled and relocated – taking your covered workspace with you rather than starting from scratch at the next site.

Discover how this plays out in demanding environments, and how our dome shelters can help keep your mining operation going all year long.

What size do you need?

For heavy vehicle work, size matters. Ezy Igloo offers domes for both 20ft and 40ft container setups, with standard widths from 6m up to 21m. For most heavy vehicle applications, a 40ft container with a 12m or wider dome gives you the clearspan and internal height you need. Domes can also be added end-to-end using a Cover Joiner Strip if you need additional length. Browse the full range on our sizes page to find the right configuration for your site.

Built to Australian standards – not just assembled here

There’s no shortage of cheaper imported container shelters on the market, but not all are built to the same standard. Ezy Igloo shelters are Australian-designed, built with heavy-duty galvanised steel arches and Australian-made Canvacon® PE fabric, and backed by Weld Test Certificates, Mill Test Certificates, and third-party inspections. Every shelter comes with a 10-year structural warranty and a 20-year UV warranty on the fabric cover – the kind of confidence you want from a structure protecting expensive equipment and your team.
